Rosas A Love Supreme

“Absolute magic….she manages to combine the genius of Coltrane…with the genius of these dancing bodies, including their improvisations in response. The music becomes flesh. Coltrane’s prayer becomes humanity.”—La Libre Belgique

Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Rosas—one of today’s leading European companies—return with this incandescent evening of dance set to jazz saxophonist John Coltrane’s iconic ode to divine love.

Featuring Coltrane, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones, A Love Supreme (1965) is one of jazz’s most enduring masterpieces. The work is legendary for many reasons—its balanced interplay between raw improvisation and meticulous form, its questing sense of spirituality—but the song-suite ultimately succeeds through these four musicians and their powerful blending of styles.

Now their soulful reach for transcendence is translated into dance by De Keersmaeker in collaboration with Catalan dancer and choreographer Salva Sanchis, who bring together their own improvised and composed materials. Each of Rosas’s four male dancers focus on the specific style of one of the musicians, reflecting his dynamics in earthy, voluptuous movement. The result: an uplifting, ecstatic highlight of our dance season you won’t want to miss.
