On the first Saturday of each month, thousands of visitors converge on High Street in the Short North Arts District for Gallery Hop. Though many shops and galleries are open earlier, Gallery Hop officially starts at 4:00pm and runs to 10:00pm, with restaurants and bars staying open considerably later. With dozens of galleries and non-traditional exhibit spaces, it’s Columbus’ favorite night of the month to celebrate art. Hop til you drop this Saturday, January 6 and check out the amazing new artwork exhibiting at galleries and businesses all month long.

Brandt-Roberts Galleries

Brandt-Roberts Galleries will be featuring five new represented artists: Jane Carney, Teri Dryden, Jeffrey Hirst,  Jolene Powell, and Nick Reszetar.  

 

 

 

 

 

Hammond Harkins

Hammond Harkins Galleries‘ Small and Wonderful will be on view until January 14.  Additionally, make sure to stop in to see Storybooks and Other Narratives: Aminah Robinson & Faith Ringgold when it opens later in the month from January 19 through March 4. An opening reception for the new exhibition will take place on Friday, January 19 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

 

Lindsay Gallery

Lindsay Gallery will be featuring “Gallery Artists”, a group show curated from a variety of Lindsay Gallery artists.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Marcia Evans Gallery

Marcia Evans Gallery will be featuring Artful Holiday Gifts from December 2 through January 28, an exhibition which includes small paintings, sculptures, hand-blown glass, jewelry, and scarves. Participating artists include Kate Argow, Kimberly Erb, John Evans, Doug Frates, Larry Hamill, Michael Halliday, Alice Kiderman, Cameron MacPhail, Truet McDowell, Kate Morgan, Annette Poitau, and Linda Wesner.

 

 

 

Pizzuti Collection

Pizzuti Collection welcomes the public to a stellar pair of exhibitions, on view from November 17, 2017 – April 29, 2018. 

Lines/Edges: Frank Stella on Paper features a range of Stella’s experiments on paper, including early translations of his “Black” series and shaped canvases, magnificent color woodcuts and screen prints from the 1980’s, and “Moby Dick Deckle Edges”, an impressive nine work grouping of large-scale prints from the early 1990’s based on Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick”.


Pair: Glen Baldridge and Alex Dodge is the inaugural edition in what will be a series of exhibitions juxtaposing two artists from the Pizzuti Collection. Glen Baldridge and Alex Dodge experiment sharply and slyly with materials and this exhibition is an unfolding narrative about their respective processes.

ROY G BIV

ROY G BIV Gallery presents its annual Small Works exhibiton, available through January 27. The exhibition fills the gallery with art smaller than 1 ft. x 1 ft. x 1 ft. Showcasing around 100 works by ROY’s member artists, Small Works features myriad styles and mediums.

 

 

 

 

Sean Christopher Gallery OH

Sean Christopher Gallery Ohio‘s RELAY – PART 2 is an ongoing exhibition of new video, performance, and sculpture work by Columbus-based artist Melissa Yes. The show continues December 2, 2017 thru January 27, 2018.

The PART 2 exhibition will include a new video from Yes’ December 2 premiere of “One and a Thousand Coyotes”, a live lecture/performance featured during the exhibitions’ opening reception.  Additionally, an artist reception for this second part of the exhibition will be held on Gallery Hop from 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm.  Select photographic Limited Edition still images from the artist’s video “COYOTE” will be made available for purchase from the reception until the show’s closing.

 

Sharon Weiss Gallery

Sharon Weiss Gallery will have a salon exhibit for the month of January.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sherrie Gallerie

For Sherrie Gallerie‘s Intimate, international, national, and local artists were invited to create small scale, detailed, and personal artworks for Holiday gift giving. Those which were not taken home to go under someone’s Christmas tree will continue to be available for viewing and purchase on Gallery Hop.

 

 

 

 

Studios on High

Studios on High Gallery begins 2018 with a group show that features member artists’ seasonal interpretations. Winter’s Embrace showcases artworks that creatively celebrate the winter months – from images of cold desolation to the fire’s warmth that shields from the gripping freeze.

 

 

 

 

OTHER ART ACTIVITIES

Columbus Convention Center

Visit the SMG-managed Greater Columbus Convention Center for free 45-minute guided tours of the largest contemporary collection of central Ohio art! Tours will be offered the afternoon of the January Gallery Hop, at 3:00 pm, 4:00 pm, and 5:00 pm.  The tour features the interactive “As We Are” by Matthew Mohr, a 14-foot-tall, three-dimensional universal human head sculpture that contains a photo booth capable of shooting 3D pictures. After each photo shoot, the guest emerges from the booth to see his or her portrait projected as the enlarged face of “As We Are.”
Visitors wishing to experience “As We Are” are typically assisted by GCCC Guest Services ambassadors on Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, with extended hours based on event schedules. The special Gallery Hop parking rate in the Goodale Garage is $5 per vehicle from 4:00 pm – 10:00 pm.

First Commonwealth Bank

First Commonwealth Bank is thrilled to be featuring the amazing work of local artist Andy Blal. Since 1998, Andy has been creating sculptures with light using recycled lamps, metals, and found objects. Working out of a home studio in the neighborhood of Olde Oaks, he feeds his passion for sculpture by reusing and recycling existing materials as a way to bring ambient light into homes across the country. His work will be displayed and lighting up the First Commonwealth Bank branch lobby through the end of January. They invite you to stop by from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm during Gallery Hop to meet Andy and enjoy his unique artwork. Light refreshments will be served.

Gallery Denmark

Gallery Denmark by Denmark on High will be featuring Nelsa Art from January through March. Nelsa was born and raised in Cuba before immigrating to America. She has always worked with her hands, from making clothing and poems to her current works of art. As she grew older, she taught her loved ones to appropriate art and to follow their own passions.

Pies & Pints

Pies & Pints‘ Artist of the Month is artist and musician, Benjamin Lamb. He combines illustration with his love of woodworking and wordplay to create layered wood compositions that poke fun at current events and mash up various pop culture icons. He has been exhibiting his work in solo and group shows in Columbus since 2008, and was recently profiled in the music documentary “Who Is Lydia Loveless?” You can see his work online at instagram.com/blammo70.

Skully’s Music Diner

Catch Comedian Femi at Skully’s Music-Diner for an early show starting at 5:00 pm. Urban R&B artists, including Mic O and Talabz, will be performing throughout this all-ages show.  Tickets are $30.00 at the door, or get front row tickets for $50.00.  Find more information here.
