April left us in a green blur that not even St. Patrick’s Day can rival. We were bombarded with questions, concerns, initiatives, products, and events. The Short North was not blameless in the attack of eco-friendly advice. We’re just hoping that some of the information you acquired during the greenest month of the year stuck and will carry on through those less colorful months.
For Tyler Steele, owner of Greenovate (9 E Second Ave), every day is a day in April. He makes his living giving green advice and helping people build environmentally conscious homes and businesses. Tyler works mainly with contractors and architects, but he also gets the occasional homeowner who just needs help making his or her house more efficient.
Tyler’s general knowledge of the green scene is expansive. But his niche is finding exclusive, top-notch, green building materials like hardwood floors, carpet, countertops, shelving, cabinetry, and back splashes. If you’re in need of a green surface or interior finish, he’s your man. His hottest items right now include cork, rubber, and bamboo flooring.
No matter your need, Tyler is there to help. If you have a problem that doesn’t fall within his area of service, for example, if you’d like to discuss heating and cooling options or determine which refrigerator would be best for your space, he can at least point you in the right direction.
Tyler’s number one piece of advice for builders and homeowners is investigate. He says, “Do research on all the materials that are going into your space. Go into your project educated. Know the story behind the materials you use. And remember that you get what you pay for, so go with higher quality.”
