Hop at Home for the Short North Arts District August Gallery Hop! Columbus’ favorite day of the month to celebrate art will continue virtually primarily via the @ShortNorthArtsDistrict Instagram Story, as well as on the Short North Arts District Facebook Page. The August Virtual Gallery Hop will feature a sneak peek at the latest artwork for sale, artist stories, and more from local galleries; new products and promotions from other local businesses; and virtual performances from some of Gallery Hop’s favorite musicians.

Select art galleries and other businesses will also be open to the public, with many offering private appointments in addition to virtual options. You can also view the in-progress creation of the all-new mural wall, Summer Spray, as artist Hakim Callwood creates his section of the 1,280 square-foot wall located on W. Goodale St. between Park and High St; the latest iteration of the Short North Arts District Mural Series, One World; and other public art throughout the area via the Short North Arts District Art Trail.

Gallery Exhibitions

Brandt-Roberts Galleries
Brandt-Roberts Galleries will continue to feature new works by Dayton-based artist Caitlin Cartwright. Cartwright’s work is largely informed by her experience working with vulnerable populations around the world. Her vibrant and narrative works combine painting, drawing, and collage with a hint of surrealism. The work will be on view in the gallery through August 23 and the virtual exhibition is available on brandtrobertsgalleries.com through September 30.

Hammond Harkins Galleries
Hammond Harkins Galleries will feature the two exhibitions currently on view: #fromthestudio, including selections from the gallery’s online catalog exhibition, and the cyanotype photogram series out of the blue by artist Melissa Vogley Woods. Hammond Harkins Galleries will also be open on August 1 from 11:00am to 4:00pm.

Lindsay Gallery
Random Acts Of Art 3, a group show featuring artists Bill Miller, Harry Underwood, Amber Groome, Joey Monsoon, Cleophas Lachance, and One World Mural Series artist Adam Hernandez, will be on view at Lindsay Gallery and during the August Virtual Gallery Hop.

Marcia Evans Gallery
Marcia Evans Gallery will feature Annette Poitau’s solo show of new environmental abstract oil paintings,  Awakening, which will be on view through August 29. A French-born American artist, Poitau received her MFA in Paris, France and later studied in New York. Her environmental abstracts include bold, rich colors and textures that are grounded in dynamic natural forms and are representative of the earth, with elements of nature. The opening will take place Sunday, August 2 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

(Not) Sheep Gallery
(Not) Sheep Gallery will feature the artwork of One World Mural Series artist Julie Ellen Byrne. (Not) Sheep Gallery will also display controversial and timely artwork by gallery artists, particularly women and minorities.

Sarah Gormley Gallery
Christiane Curry’s second solo exhibit at SGG will include new, intimate watercolor landscapes, based on memories of different regions of France and the openness of Ohio farmland. Her show will be up and available for viewing by appointment through the month of August.

Sean Christopher Gallery Ohio
Join Sean Christopher Gallery for Karji Jimi Weah: Satisfied during the August Virtual Gallery Hop. The gallery will also be offering open gallery hours on August 1, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

The Liberia-native and Columbus-based artist’s first solo exhibition includes 34 collectible drawings. Each rendered piece is a celebration of Weah’s humility and African upbringing. Weah’s original drawing entitled “Satisfied” was recently selected, reproduced, and installed at 1359 N. High St (The Hippie Hut) as part of One World, the latest iteration of the Short North Arts District Mural Series showcasing the diversity of global artists and their experiences. The original work is included in the artist’s solo show at SCGO.

Sharon Weiss Gallery
Sharon Weiss Gallery will be open on Saturday, August 1 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, with artwork by Michael Guiane on view. Of his work, Guinane said: “The emotion of a single moment is what motivates me to paint. Whether it be a still and quiet moment of an individual, or capturing the total environment created by multiple figures in one place, I try to allow you to see deeper into the subject and the moment. It may be a moment in history or a personal experience, a quiet night in the park or a busy city street, the works try to capture the feeling and mood of being one gets from being in a certain place or time.” For inquiries, please email SharonRog12@gmail.com or call (614) 371.9156.

Sherrie Gallerie
Sherrie Gallerie will host works by One World Mural Series artist Zemer Peled, including her original mural sculpture and an exhibition of other works; a window display of paintings on acrylic by Ron Johnson; and an outdoor sculpture by Russ Vogt in the Sherrie Gallerie sculpture garden on Pearl Alley behind the gallery.

Studios on High Gallery
Studios on High Gallery will debut Jennifer Jolley-Brown’s Narratives on August 1, with opening hours from 1:00pm to 6:00pm For Jolley-Brown, art is a story and a journey. She began by making “mud sculptures” in her backyard (yes, actual mud) and progressed to wall hangings made with yarn and dowel rods, creating the heaviest clay bowl known to humankind (which still survives), and continuing through almost every kind of art imaginable.

Printmaking is another of her mediums, particularly intaglio. Jolley-Brown is inspired by the natural and built environments, both the familiar and the newly discovered. She loves when people ask what inspired a particular piece, because there’s always a story. Telling the story makes the journey worthwhile. Narratives will remain on view through September 3.

Other August 1 Activities

Glean
The Short North’s beloved artist Malcolm J will be showing artwork at Glean that has never been viewed before by the public. Malcolm is reviving social and political work that he created long ago that he considers controversial in nature. He believes that with the climate of change occurring in our society today, this body work is more relevant than ever before. The show will be on display through August 30.

Greater Columbus Convention Center
Visit the largest contemporary collection of central Ohio art within the Greater Columbus Convention Center, and get a selfie with the interactive sculpture, “As We Are,” by Matthew Mohr.

Those interested in visiting the Short North Arts District in person can learn how to make their visit Short North Safe. Masks are currently required for entry into any Short North Arts District business. Local businesses are also taking additional safety precautions, such as offering private appointments, limiting capacity, increasing routine cleaning, encouraging clients to social distance and sanitize, and more.
