Changing leaves, a chill in the air, pumpkin-flavored everything, all indicators that fall is here. In Columbus, there is another big sign that fall is underway: scarlet and gray floods the city for the Ohio State football season. The campus area can be an intimidating place on game days, so avoid the stress and bring your Buckeye spirit down to the vibrant Short North.
Many bars and restaurants in the Short North feature specials for Ohio State games. One local watering hole that loves to pack in the Buckeye fans is Bernard’s Tavern. Bernard’s features specials on food every game day, along with fifty cent wings and $12 domestic buckets of beer. There is also an extensive food menu with something for everyone, including vegetarian options. Come back the following day for the NFL ticket. Five flat screens mounted above the bar make it a fun place for any sports fan.
Another local business hoping to draw in the OSU crowd is House of Cigar. Their newest location in the Short North, House of Montecristo, is the perfect man-cave getaway for sport’s fans. This destination is open late until at least midnight. Lounge in the numerous leather sofas while enjoying a fine cigar or hookah and watching the Buckeyes battle their opponents on the six flat screens located throughout the den area.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are also bars which boast as being a safe-haven from the football madness. Surly Girl Saloon is one such place where there are no televisions in site. Instead of face painting and screaming, come enjoy the calmer atmosphere of their weekend brunch, offered from 11am-4pm. Surly Girl has a large variety of beer on tap so you are sure to find your new favorite ale here. Indulge in their house infused liquors or the daily cupcake special and enjoy your time away from rowdy super-fans.
Dining at home or organizing your own tailgate is made easy with the new Short North Kroger. Stop in on Friday and you will see the store start to fill with Buckeye themed goodies in preparation for Saturday. Many pastries can be picked up to decorate your table with OSU pride. Browse the vast new store and grab a Block O cupcake cake or call ahead and place a special order with the bakery.
You can also come to the Short North any day of the week for OSU gift shopping. Multiple area businesses sell OSU apparel along with their regular offerings and a few even specialize in the scarlet and gray. A newcomer to the area is The Buckeye Connection. This OSU apparel store has a little of everything for the Buckeye fan. From hoodies to boots to beads, they’ve got you covered. Every home game weekend they offer some sort of sale, along with a customer loyalty program called “We’re All Buckeyes.” Details can be found on their website, which is also featuring free shipping through the end of the year. So, stop in between 8am and 9pm on game days or order online anytime!
A few more eclectic gift shops have expanded to offer some OSU merchandise. One retailer with Buckeye items is the quirky bink davies. One of the more popular scarlet and gray items is their “Heart of Ohio” tee. They also carry team colored loop scarves, which any fashionista could transform from a scarf to a head wrap to a belt effortlessly. Bink davies also has a variety of OSU gifts such as ornaments, wine glasses, banners, and tailgating supplies.
Many customers love to frequent Global Gallery because of their fair trade outreach practices. Currently Global Gallery is featuring a gorgeous gray scarf with a red, embroidered Block O. It is made from one hundred percent Alpaca wool by women in Bolivia. It is then purchased at a fair price, like all of the other handmade, fair trade items in the store.
Whether you are looking for a bar to be your game day hotspot or shopping for the perfect Saturday attire, the Short North has what you need. Experience the charm of the area and enjoy your Saturdays with other Buckeye fans in the Short North Arts District. O-H!
