head count

Our two established Ohio-based artists display differing art-making processes and subject matter. Chris Taylor exhibits a series of his color abstract paintings (introducing a head form) titled “Front” and Eileen Woods offers a mixed media series of acrylic, wood burning and graphite works named “The Waiting Room”.

What are the figures in these artworks thinking about? Can time simultaneously be both dynamic and seemingly set on pause? Does the exhibition’s title allude to the more than 30,000 visitors expected to attend “Hops on High” during Gallery Hops’ “Head Count” Opening?

Exhibition dates September 8 – October 18

sandra aska

Sandra Aska uses ceramic figures with neutral and enigmatic expressions to convey personal confusion and dismay about the world. She is a political commentator and story teller. If you were to ask her what her work means she would respond: “What does it mean to you?” Her themes are complex emotional responses to today’s world. Her technique balances classical representational skill with conceptual abstraction. Her work, reflecting her practice as a painter, is covered with lines, marks, stains of color, and drawings. It is compelling and thought-provoking and merges technical skill with expressive meaning.

the golden hour

Studios on High Gallery’s September show captures the magic of the Golden Hour – the most peaceful time of day – the hour in the morning as the sun rises and the hour before it sets.

In Annette Simon’s exhibition, she illustrates this phenomenon in oils, capturing the sense of time changing as the light moves across the earth. “With the changing time comes a certain type of light that creates form, line, value, color, texture, movement and shape.”

The Gathered is a 625 sq ft tile mosaic by North Carolina-based artist Andrew Hendrixson. The mosaic, composed of an undulating rhythm of nearly 400,000 12 mm bespoke glass tiles, reminds viewers of the individual small pieces that comprise the whole, a metaphor for community. It is installed on the east-facing wall of the Parkside on Pearl building, facing Italian Village Park.
