Austrian artist Anita Witek makes her debut at the Wexner Center with a monumental, site-specific photomontage installation in the lower lobby, the first the artist has realized in the US.
Drawing from an immense archive of printed material that she has amassed over time, Witek begins each of her projects by extracting subjects and recognizable figures from found images. Through this act of elision, the artist interrupts our perceptual habits and instinct to rapidly consume the torrent of imagery that permeates contemporary life. Out of the decontextualized fragments, she builds augmented, richly layered visual fields that envelop viewers in a landscape of fractures and fissures.
Witek’s work has been exhibited at various galleries and museums throughout Europe and the US, including the Leopold Museum, Secession, and Kunst Haus Wien in Vienna; Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The artist lives and works in Vienna.
