“Surprisingly emotional and heartfelt…a stunning achievement in documentary form.”—IndieWire
While this wholly original film is her directorial debut, Kirsten Johnson has been the cinematographer for many of today’s most significant documentarians, including Laura Poitras, Michael Moore, Barbara Kopple, and Kirby Dick, among others. The stunning and memorable images in Cameraperson are drawn from unused footage from her storied career, focusing on moments and situations that have personally affected her. This accumulation of extraordinary scenes meant for other purposes now tell a different story, adding up to an intimate self-portrait of the person behind the camera and how she chooses to exist in the world. An extraordinary examination of art and ethics—not just of documentary filmmaking, but also of just being human. (102 mins., DCP)
