Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt (Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, 1989)

One of the defining films of the first decade of the AIDS epidemic, Common Threads follows five very diverse people who shared a common fate. Ranging from an Olympic athlete to a recovering heroin addict, each of their lives (and thousands of others) were represented by a square on the AIDS Memorial Quilt. This giant patchwork was momentously unfurled during the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights in 1987 to protest the government’s refusal to acknowledge a growing crisis. (81 mins., 16mm)
