In The Crime of Monsieur Lange, by the great humanist director Jean Renoir (The Rules of the Game), the employees of a small publisher form a cooperative to keep it running when their lascivious miser of a boss disappears ahead of his creditors. The company is thriving on the strength of a clerk’s American-style cowboy stories when who should reappear to retake his place at the head of the company?
