Ex Libris: New York Public Library (Frederick Wiseman, 2017)
New Documentary
“One of the most important and original filmmakers working today.”—A. O. Scott and Manohla Dargis, New York Times
Over the course of 50 years and 42 films, Frederick Wiseman has become our most dedicated and essential filmic chronicler of American life and institutions—as well as one of the most-shown filmmakers in the Wexner Center’s history (including a memorable retrospective and visit in 2006). For his latest project, Wiseman became the first filmmaker granted permission to make a documentary about one of the world’s greatest temples of learning, the New York Public Library system. With more than 90 branches, a dedicated staff, and a strong base of patrons and donors, the library is one of New York’s most venerable institutions. Wiseman’s documentary comes at a crucial moment as libraries across the country try to figure out ways to sustain their traditional activities while developing new programs that ensure their relevance amid today’s digital revolution.
