“Transcendental and immersive.”—Hyperallergic

“It’s not every day you witness a new cinematic language being born, but watching RaMell Ross’s evocatively titled documentary Hale County, This Morning, This Evening qualifies.”—Village Voice

In a category of its own, Hale County This Morning, This Evening is a captivating portrait of Hale County, Alabama, and the predominately black and poor communities that live there. Focusing on a range of experiences (the celebratory as well as the tragic), photographer and filmmaker RaMell Ross captures both the mundane and cosmic aspects of black life in the United States’ historic South. The kaleidoscopic documentary includes births, deaths, and everything in-between—with a special emphasis on some of the most striking basketball scenes ever filmed. This emotive impression of the region declares both the beauty of black lives and the consequences of the social construction of race. Winner of a US Documentary Special Jury Award for Creative Vision at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, Hale County could be the most essential film you’ll see all year. (76 mins., DCP)
