Focusing on a range of experiences (the celebratory as well as the tragic), photographer and filmmaker RaMell Ross captures both the mundane and cosmic aspects of black life in the United States’ historic South. The kaleidoscopic documentary includes births, deaths, and everything in-between—with a special emphasis on some of the most striking basketball scenes ever filmed. This emotive impression of the region declares both the beauty of black lives and the consequences of the social construction of race.
