Finally getting an official theatrical release 50 years after its creation, Inquiring Nuns is a fascinating and transporting time capsule from 1968. During that politically fraught moment, two outgoing nuns roamed the streets of Chicago asking strangers the question, “Are you happy?” The startlingly frank, thoughtful, humorous, and diverse answers they receive from passersby in all walks of life add up to a serious and often moving inquiry into contemporary society. Featuring Philip Glass’s first credited soundtrack, the film was an early creation by Kartemquin Films, the landmark producers behind documentaries such as Hoop DreamsThe Interrupters, and Minding the Gap. (66 mins., 16mm)
