Presented in the lobby of Le Meridien Columbus, The Joseph, Opera Columbus’ Opera on the Edge presents #UncleJohn. #UncleJohn is one of the newest Transladaptations from opera director, Joel Ivany. He has transposed Mozart’s tumultuous masterpiece to Columbus’ funky club scene, delivering an original take which is “smart, sassy and meticulously crafted,” (Opera Going Toronto). The setting is Masetto and Zerlina’s wedding reception, catered by the high-powered Michael Bridge and his daughter businesswoman (Donna) Anna, all of which presents the perfect predatory setting that allows Uncle John to pursue the bride. Pull out your smartphones as texting plays an important role roping in protagonists’ passions for all to see (you’ll want to make sure you come for Leporello’s iPad aria). Creator Joel Ivany’s boisterous #UncleJohn “sets a new standard for contemporary theatrical adaptations, musical and otherwise.” This brand new Don Giovanni, “with its glossy polish and hipster lifestyle jokes, comfortably inhabits its classic skin.” It’s Mozart, an hour long and sung in English.
