Visconti’s lush epic of the 1866 Italian-Austrian War stars American leading man Farley Granger as a young Austrian officer and Alida Valli (also stunning in The Third Man) as a Venetian countess who betrays her country for his love. Visconti’s first film in color endured both a troubled production and a scathing critical reception on its release, yet Sensois now considered a masterpiece and a strong influence on films such as Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence. (123 mins., DCP)
