The Wex is proud to launch a new partnership with the Columbus International Film + Video Festival (the oldest in the US) and Columbus College of Art & Design with this presentation of the festival’s opening night screening—Signature Move.
Directed by Columbus native, Ohio State alum, and Wex Artist Residency Award recipient Jennifer Reeder, this charming coming-of-age melodrama follows Zaynad, a thirtysomething Muslim Pakistani living in Chicago, as she navigates her relationship with her TV-obsessed and recently widowed mother. Little does her mother know that Zaynad is falling in love with a Mexican woman named Alma and coping with all her stress by taking Lucha-style wrestling classes from a former WWE wrestler.
Screening here fresh from its premiere at South by Southwest, Signature Move was cowritten by and stars Fawzia Mirza, who was named a White House Champion of Change in Asian-American Art & Storytelling, and also features Shabana Azmi, a living legend of Indian cinema who appeared in films by Satyajit Ray, Blake Edwards, and Mira Nair. (79 mins., DCP)
