The carefully observed drama Songs My Brothers Taught Me captures the lives of Lakota Native American high school students living on a reservation in the South Dakota Badlands. Capturing the nuances of their existence on the margins, the film contrasts the natural beauty of the region with the characters’ despair. Director Chloé Zhao set out to make a movie that asks, “how do you leave the only place you’ve ever known?” The result is a remarkable, sensitive, and truly impressive debut. (94 mins., DCP) Preceded by Vera Brunner-Sung’s First Rodeo, an homage to the performance, pain, and perfection to be found at a rodeo. (3 min., 16mm)
