One of the few American features directed by a woman to be theatrically released in the early 1970s, Barbara Loden’s tale of an unforgettable antiheroine is finally getting the widespread recognition it deserves. A former model and actress who appeared in a handful of husband Elia Kazan’s productions, Loden wrote, directed, and starred in what is now considered one of the greatest feminist films ever made. The candidly realistic drama follows a woman navigating life at the margins of Pennsylvania coal country after leaving her husband. (103 mins., DCP)

Restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
