Join Hammond Harkins Galleries during the July Gallery Hop to celebrate a great tradition that champions new voices and cross-cultural exchange. The time and modest financial support allow the selected artists to focus on research and art production. Several Hammond Harkins artists have received the distinction and are gathered together for the first time to commemorate their achievements.

Fiber Artist, Deb Johnson and Mixed-Media Artist, Ruth Ann Mitchell anchor an interactive exhibition for the July Gallery Hop. Intentionally untitled, the viewer is invited to grab a pencil and write on the wall — what they see, what they think the title should be — forming their own interpretations of these abstract works. Patrons can then compare and maybe attempt to see something through someone else’s eyes, perhaps sparking thoughtful dialogue. It’s all left to viewer interpretation.

A commentary on our times, this show asks viewers to inquire into and consider how individuals can perceive very different things — albeit, having observed the identical image. How willing are you to try to see something from another vantage point? Once you’ve decided, what is your capacity to revisit and reinterpret based on new information or another point of view? The premise of this show is to spark discussion, foster understanding and explore a range of interpretations, allowing that what each of us sees and how each of us interprets, is unique.
Studios on High Gallery’s July Gallery Hop hours are from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In advance of Independence Day, July Gallery Hop welcomes “Parade as a Protest Artform: Photographs of Doo Dah 1990,” showcasing a captivating collection of printed images captured by artist Carolyn P. Speranza on Kodachrome slide film. These photographs serve as a historical record of the events that took place during that year’s Doo Dah parade in Columbus.

These photographs document the Anti-Censorship Demonstration at the Columbus Ohio July 4th 1990 Doo Dah Parade. A group of art students, artists, arts professionals and the art-loving public organized a fun and passionate protest directed at the U.S. Senator Jessie Helms led censuring take-down of National Endowments for the Arts funding. The demonstration was visually and performatively engaging while at the same time, expressed a need for protecting our First Amendment civil rights in a loud and provocative way.

This exhibition is on view at Short North Tavern from July 1 – August 4,
