The celebration of freedom — that’s the idea behind Juneteenth, or June 19, as it commemorates the last enslaved African Americans being freed in the United States. Though while the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in 1863, it would take two more years for this news to reach the deepest parts of the South, thus beginning the observation of this Freedom Day in 1865.

While Juneteenth has been celebrated throughout Black communities for generations, it became an official federal holiday in the United States in 2021, allowing for a widespread commemoration throughout communities and organizations across the country.

It’s become more important than ever that we celebrate Juneteenth in a way that truly honors its history and supports Black communities. This year, we’re celebrating by continuing to uplift Black businesses and hard working entrepreneurs right here in the Short North Arts District. By supporting Black-owned businesses, you’re helping to create and sustain more entrepreneurial opportunities, which helps to empower Black communities as the fight for justice, equality and equity continues.

Click below as we’ve compiled a list of local Black-owned businesses you can shop today — and all year long!
