“tavares strachan: the day tomorrow began”

Experience the first museum survey in the U.S. of pathbreaking Bahamian conceptual artist Tavares Strachan (born 1979, Nassau, Bahamas). Defining himself as an explorer and storyteller, Strachan has developed a singular artistic practice fusing art, science, and cultural inquiry. At the heart of the exhibition is his Encyclopedia of Invisibility, an evolving compendium of “hidden” histories, which the artist has compiled into an open-ended archive of figures, events, and ideas suppressed within canonizing historical narratives.

“Tavares Strachan: The Day Tomorrow Began” is co-organized by Columbus Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

This rendering of “She Moves in Color” introduces the concept, with installation scheduled to occur in late April through early May, 2026.
she moves in color

The “Mona Lisa” mural has been an important symbol of the Short North’s creative history since its creation by Brian Clemons in 1990. The next chapter for this piece has been approached with care and consideration for both its past and future. The installation of the new piece, “She Moves in Color,” is now underway and expected to be completed in early May.

Artist Mandi Caskey a.k.a. Miss Birdy shares her vision for the piece: “My goal was not to completely reinvent the mural, but to give it a subtle sense of renewed life and contemporary spark. The expressive brush stroke treatment introduces movement, color energy, and modern presence, while allowing Mona Lisa herself to remain grounded, recognizable, and respectful to the original legacy of the piece.”

This is a project of the Short North Alliance made possible with support from The Greater Columbus Arts Council, Crawford Hoying, and Compton Construction.

“The Gathered” is a 625 sq ft tile mosaic by North Carolina-based artist Andrew Hendrixson. The mosaic, composed of an undulating rhythm of nearly 400,000 12 mm bespoke glass tiles, reminds viewers of the individual small pieces that comprise the whole, a metaphor for community. It is installed on the east-facing wall of the Parkside on Pearl building, facing Italian Village Park.
